In the old days, we used to endlessly debate: “How do you get people to align themselves with the goals of the organisation?”
“Pay them more”. “Give them more responsibility”. “Threaten them with loss of employment if they don’t!” All these ‘solutions’ have been tried and have been found wanting.
Today we have to ask instead: “How do we build organisations that merit the gifts of passion, creativity and initiative that humans possess?”
We cannot command these capabilities. Imagination and commitment are the things your people CHOOSE to bring to work every day – or not.
