At some point all liquor licensees will be faced with a decision about refusing to serve alcohol to a patron. Whether this decision is based on legal or safety requirements, it is important to deliver a consistent message that all patrons understand.
We have always stressed that the best results in keeping your venue safe, accrue from constant vigilance:
- assess each patron EVERY time they approach the bar (even if they have just arrived)
- train glassies to assess each table as they go about their work, and report back immediately they spot potential trouble
- don’t leave refusal too late – cut off sooner rather than later
- when YOU KNOW that this one will be the customer’s last drink – TELL HIM ALSO
Our mates at OLGR also have a (more lengthy) checklist on refusal of service, which you can access HERE.
